Il volto del Palazzo Senatorio verso il Foro Romano nel Settecento

The paper focuses its attention on the architectural development of the ‘Palazzo Senatorio’ (Senatorial Palace) in Rome during the Baroque age, considering especially the prospectus in front of the Roman fora. It acted as an urban backdrop of the archeological area, creating a picturesque effect greatly admired both in Italy and abroad. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the building had been renovated by the Roman senators, who modernized the apartments that they used as residences. By comparing archival evidence (many of which had been published in an appendix of 25 significant unpublished documents) and several little-known engravings (preserved in the historical collection of important institutions, such as the BIASA, the Museo di Roma, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, and others), the research had interwoven this data with the building’s floor plans kept in Rome’s Capitoline Archive, gathering interesting new findings.

Il contributo rivolge l'attenzione sulla crescita volumetrica del Palazzo Senatorio nel fronte verso il foro Romano - vera e propria quinta urbana della più vasta area archeologica della città- nei secoli XVII e XVIII, nei quali si consolida l'immagine ancor oggi visibile, relativa per lo più alla costruzione degli ambienti utilizzati come residenza dei Senatori nel periodo esaminato. Il saggio è incentrato sull''interpolazione dei dati documentari (inclusi in una significativa appendice di nn. 25 documenti per lo più inediti - custoditi presso l'archivio Storico Capitolino) una serie di svariate e poco note incisioni (custodite in collezioni e fondi storici BIASA, Museo di Roma, Istituto Centrale per la Grafica ecc.), alcune importanti planimetrie (conservate nell'archivio Capitolino e altrove).
