The essay explains the various meanings of the term “corruption” and focuses the present examination on any transfers of goods from the ecclesiastical patrimony that are intended to support needy people but are instead used for personal benefit; on the buying and selling of church offices, roles or sacred things (simony); on the vote-buying in the councils as well as towards the external society; on the money given to or by representatives of public institutions to obtain a preferential treatment. Already before the Constantinian era (according to various sources, including Cyprian, Commodian and Eusebius), in Christian churches corruption phenomena had been attested, which grew afterwards. However, there is also a large so-called "grey area", where it is hard to discern between consolidated customs and abuse. The essay ends by presenting the violent denunciation of Christian corruption by Bishop Salvianus of Marseille.
