Abstract

Landscape paths in Lazio Region. The Velletri-Terracina railway, a regeneration project from the inland to the coastland. The Rome-Velletri-Terracina line connected the lower Lazio coast to Rome, simplified and increased commercial traffic and the movement of the inhabitants of the province to the capital, networking a series of smaller towns that were first completely isolated. In 1958, the Velletri – Priverno section was officially abolished and in 2012, the service to Terracina was interrupted due to a landslide along the line. The experimentation for the reuse and revitalization of this railway is therefore aimed at the construction of a historical-environmental itinerary, which, through the railway route, enhances the local naturalistic and cultural heritage, integrating the resources and investments available to promote the fruition of the territory beyond the summer season and beyond the bathing activity. A territory whose landscapes, although heterogeneous in their natural and geographical characteristics, are the expression and testimony of a common identity and historical-cultural heritage. The Castelli Romani, the Agro Romano and Pontino, the internal areas as well as the coastal ones, were the scene of profound transformations related to the reclamation works of the Agro Pontino. A territorial system consisting of the sea, the coastal lakes, the Selva di Terracina, the many archaeological pre-existences in which the historical and cultural matrix is characterized by being a land conquered by man, colonized and planned to enhance its productive and agricultural vocation. A feature that has conditioned the belonging and the link between the population and its context, which deserves to be told by following the footprints that remain visible in the very conformation of the territory, in the design of the fields, of the reclamation channels, in the urban morphology of the crossed historic centers.
