The following etymologies of Khotanese words are offered and discussed: Late Kh. dūvara‐ ‘dropsy’ < OKh. *datūvara‐ ← Gandhari *daγoδara- < Sanskrit dakodara- = udakodara- (Silvia Luzzietti); Old Kh. pūhä ʾta- ‘slim, slender’ < Archaic Kh. *pūhäsa‐ < (Indo-)Iranian *pati-θu̯ai̯š-a‐ ‘fast, swift’, whose phonological develpoment is entirely regular and the shift of meaning parallels the one observed in Old High German snel ‘fast, swift, deft; brave’ → Old French and Old Occitan isnel ‘id.’ → Italian snello ‘fast, swift, agile, deft’ (13th c., obsolete) → (2) ‘having well-proportioned, harmonious forms (14th c., obsolete) → (3) ‘thin, slim, slender; agile’ (from the 14th century to present) [Mauro Maggi].
