Almost all patients with primary antibody deficiencies suffer from upper and lower respiratory tract bacterial infection. Severe and recurrent infection with capsulated bacteria, asthma and bronchiectasis represent the most important morbidity and mortality factors. The pathogens commonly isolated from the sputum are Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Moraxella catarrhalis occurring less frequently.
