Underlying the reflection on public space, art, architecture and identity is the cultural and disciplinary transformation which arose from the crisis of modern urban planning, with art, having left behind the concept of monument created for the purpose of celebration, establishing itself as the driving for behind both large-scale projects of renewal and broad-based initiatives aimed at reclaiming marginal and outlying areas, all of which brought to the fore «new ethical and aesthetic values, new idioms, new forms of interaction and communication» (Ricci, herein) between the work of art, the public and the context. Starting from the nineteen-seventies, public art, with its multiple modes and forms for representing and experiencing art, penetrated the urban structure and the social fabric, serving as the catalyst for actions and efforts meant to restore a recognisable identity to marginal areas, redefine the design of public space and safeguard and optimise shared assets of identity by lending them strong social, cultural, symbolic and inclusive connotations. Within this framework of reference, beginning with an analysis of two case studies of international importance that feature shared cultural references, as well as an integrated vision of art, architecture, the environment and the countryside, this contribution reflects on the role of the artist, and of the various forms of expression of contemporary life, in the renewal of public space in the contemporary city.
La riflessione tra spazio pubblico, arte, architettura e identità, si innesta sul passaggio culturale e disciplinare nato dalla crisi dell’urbanistica modernista dove l’arte, allontanandosi dal concetto di monumento a fini celebrativi, si costituisce quale elemento propulsivo, sia dei grandi progetti di rigenerazione, sia degli interventi diffusi di recupero di aree marginali e periferiche proiettando, «nuovi valori etici ed estetici, nuovi linguaggi, nuove forme di interazione e di comunicazione» (Ricci, infra) tra opera d’arte, pubblico e contesto. A partire dagli anni Settanta l’arte pubblica, che comprende molteplici modalità e forme di rappresentazione e fruizione dell’arte, penetra la struttura urbana e il tessuto sociale, agendo come catalizzatrice di azioni e di interventi pensati per restituire riconoscibilità alle aree marginali, ridefinire il disegno dello spazio pubblico, tutelare e valorizzare i beni comuni identitari attraverso un forte connotato sociale, culturale, simbolico e inclusivo. In questo quadro di riferimento, a partire dall’analisi di due casi di studio di livello internazionale, connotati da comuni riferimenti culturali e da una visione integrata di arte, architettura, ambiente e paesaggio, il contributo propone una riflessione sul ruolo dell’artista e delle diverse forme espressive della contemporaneità nella rigenerazione dello spazio pubblico nella città contemporanea.
