In the mechanism of pictorial representation the artist who paints in the picture plane the things he's seeing and the observer who gazes at the finished painting are functions - it's evident - separate in the time, but unified in the space. In Velazquez 'Las Meninas' these conditions are not valid any more. The artist gets in the illusory space of the representation in the act of painting a picture the back only is seen of. It's the preliminary assumption of an original baroque artifice. In this case the motive of the picture inside the picture refers visibly to the topic of the theater in the theater.
