The objective of this speech is to consider the potential impact of Aurel Kolnai’s essay Der Ekel (1929) on Jean-Paul Sartre’s thought, with emphasis on Sartre’s description of the contingency of existence, revealing itself in the emotional experience of «nausea» (1938-1943). In fact, critics tend to support the idea of Sartre being a reader of Kolnai’s work and, therefore, the hypothesis of an influence of Kolnai on some parts of Sartre’s philosophy. In this perspective, I argue that shapelessness and proximity to the shapeless object – considered by Kolnai as basic features of the disgusting object and disgust – are the most important characteristics of the contingency of Being in Sartre.

Abstract
The objective of this speech is to consider the potential impact of Aurel Kolnai’s essay Der Ekel (1929) on Jean-Paul Sartre’s thought, with emphasis on Sartre’s description of the contingency of existence, revealing itself in the emotional experience of «nausea» (1938-1943). In fact, critics tend to support the idea of Sartre being a reader of Kolnai’s work and, therefore, the hypothesis of an influence of Kolnai on some parts of Sartre’s philosophy. In this perspective, I argue that shapelessness and proximity to the shapeless object – considered by Kolnai as basic features of the disgusting object and disgust – are the most important characteristics of the contingency of Being in Sartre.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
