The aim of the contribution is to highlight the historiographic controversy contained in the famous Polybius' passage on the crossing of the Alps by Hannibal: the extreme experience of the Carthaginian army is a test for historians who tell it and becomes in Polybius a sort of metaphor for the dangers faced by the historian who does not have political and military experience.
