The article remarks that the relationship between form and function in PIE must not always have been two-way, and that the absence of a two-way relationship is the norm with regard to the function of componential morphemes. The selection of the function of a morpheme depended on the meaning of the root and on the combination with the other morphemes.

Nel saggio si osserva come il rapporto tra forma e funzione nell'indoeuropeo ricotruito non dovesse esser sempre biunivoco, e che l'assenza di biunivocità rappresenta la norma per quanto riguarda la funzione dei morfemi componenziali. La selezione della funzione di un morfema avviene in relazione al senso della radice e alla combinazione con gli altri morfemi.
