The article proposes a reading of José Costa's linguistic misadventures narrated by Chico Buarque de Hollanda in the novel Budapeste (2003). It establishes a comparison between the experiences lived in the past by Chico himself when he was in Rome, hypothesizing the formulation of a BUarquean theory of the second language.
