In German, verbal participles can be used in attributive function with different temporal and aspectual values. Present participle (Partizip I) indicates simultaneity, past participle (Partizip II) anteriority. Both par-ticiples are syntactically equivalent to relative clauses. They have the function of nominal condensation and can be syntactically expanded. They are typical of formal written language such as scientific, bureau-cratic or journalistic texts.
