In German, different moods can be used in reported speech: Konjunktiv I, Konjunktiv II and indicative. The choice of the specific mood is mainly determined by the explicitness of the reported speech situation (i.e. the presence of a speech verb), the communicative situation (written vs. spo-ken language) and the occurrence in specific text genres. The speaker’s commitment to the statement, however, seems to play a minor role.
