Serie e Cataloghi. Tecnica e masse

The need to think serially, a regular feature appearing in some of the more interesting research undertaken by post-modern architects, is without a doubt something that derives from technique. However, the idea of seriality as a major category of contemporary art does not appear to have been given much attention by architectural criticism, which has often merely relegated it to the level of a technique, or something belonging exclusively to a certain type of technique-oriented avant-garde. What we often need to remove – especially in Italy – is the meaning of the series that is destructive of the basic tenets of modern western architecture, let alone the archaic violently democratic examples that this obsessive manner of organising space has brought to light.

La necessità di concepire edifici attraverso ragionamenti seriali è un paradigma che ritroviamo in molte ricerche degli architetti della seconda modernità, un’istanza “popolare” e di “massa” reintrodotta nel pensiero e nelle pratiche progettuali occidentali dalla tecnica, esplosa con la rivoluzione industriale. La standardizzazione degli elementi costruttivi dell’edilizia, infatti, è uno di quei dati materiali che hanno concretamente cambiato il modo di fare architettura, sia quella “alta” che ritroviamo nei manuali, sia quella “bassa” in cui vive la maggior parte delle persone.
