Weissenhofsiedlung 1927. La questione tecnologica della modernità tra architettura e design

Die Wohnung Weißenhofsiedlung Austellung opened to the public on 23 July 1927 and represented the international answer to the theme of housing in relation to new needs. The housing complex, with its construction characteristics, furnishings, and system of objects became the manifesto of the principles of modernity under the aegis of experimentation of new forms, materials, and technologies. The technological question, the concept of type and mass production constituted one of the most relevant aspects in the relationship between architecture and design. The essay identifies in the technological «piece» the connection between the architectural organism and artifacts, proposing a reading and a comparison of the architectural details and furnishings of the Weißenhofsiedlung. The Weißenhof experiment with its linear and functional forms, the new concept of spaces, and the research on standard as best practice created a new vision of the habitat, whose goal was a radical transformation of lifestyles. Naturally, the Weißenhofsiedlung is connected to the bauhaus, to its ideas, requests, programs, projects, and protagonists.

Die Wohnung Weißenhofsiedlung Austellung aprì al pubblico il 23 luglio 1927 e rappresentò, nell’unitarietà delle sue singole varianti, la risposta internazionale al tema dell’abitazione in relazione a nuove esigenze. Il complesso abitativo, con i suoi caratteri costruttivi, gli arredi e il sistema di oggetti divenne il manifesto a posteriori dei principi della modernità nel segno della sperimentazione di nuovi registri figurativi, materiali e procedure costruttive. La questione tecnologica, il concetto di tipo e la produzione in serie costituirono uno degli aspetti più rilevanti nel rapporto tra architettura e design. La chiave di lettura individua quindi nel «pezzo» tecnologico il trait d’union tra organismo architettonico e artefatti proponendo un percorso di osservazione e comparazione dei particolari architettonici e degli arredi della Weißenhofsiedlung, dove le forme antisentimentali lineari e funzionali, la nuova concezione degli spazi, la ricerca sullo standard quale best practice, vennero considerati agenti di purificazione dell’architettura e del design secondo una visione che mirava ad una radicale trasformazione degli stili di vita.
