The essay describes the evolution of the relation between Italy and Azerbaijan in 1918.1920. During the brief independence of the Azerbaijani Republic, Italy was on the verge to play a major role in the Caucasian region. Italy was ready to send a large military expedition and to establish a protectorate over southern Caucasus That would have guaranteed the independence of the new republics of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The project was aborted in 1919.
