La collettività italiana nell’Egitto di Gamal ‘Abd al-Nasser. Alcune note a proposito dei documenti diplomatici italiani sulla visita di Fanfani al Cairo

The aim of the paper is to retrace the history of the Italian community in Egypt between the fifties and sixties, through the analysis of diplomatic documents collected in the series Gabinetto del Ministro 1961-63, now at the Historical-Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. These documents were written during the official visit to Cairo, between January 6th and 9th, 1959, of the then-Italian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Amintore Fanfani. They reveal the difficult economic and social conditions experienced by the Italian community, along with other foreign communities present at that time Egypt. A consequence of the nationalistic policies implemented by the government of the Egyptian President Gamal 'Abd al-Nasser.

L'obiettivo del saggio è quello di ricostruire la storia della collettività italiana in Egitto, tra gli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, attraverso l'analisi dei documenti diplomatici raccolti nella serie Gabinetto del Ministro 1961-63 e conservati presso l’Archivio storico diplomatico del ministero degli Affari esteri a Roma (ASDMAE). Questi documenti, compilati in occasione della visita ufficiale effettuata al Cairo tra il 6 e il 9 gennaio del 1959 dall’allora presidente del Consiglio e ministro degli Esteri italiano Amintore Fanfani, testimoniano la difficile condizione economica e sociale vissuta dalla collettività italiana, insieme alle altre comunità straniere presenti nel paese, a causa delle politiche nazionalistiche messe in atto dal governo del presidente egiziano Gamal ‘Abd al-Nasser.
