The essay restores an evolutionary picture of museum institutions made of the connections between spaces, works of art and visitors and aims to analyze the role that Design and Visual and Multimedia Communication have for the knowledge and for the enhancement of Cultural Heritage. The proposed study is supported by an organic and dynamic vision of the Cultural Heritage and by the awareness that design actions can affect both historical data and its stratification, thus regenerating its meaning with light, tangible and intangible projects. The Design works in dialogue between the different contexts of the physical and the social, and between the coexistence of ancient and contemporary in order to create synergies aimed at generating the fruition of the Heritage stored in the Museums. The Cultural Heritage is conceived as a living system and its enhancement is connected both to the visitors, as part of the system, and to the digital culture, whose the strong impact transformed the Museums in hybrid and complex devices. The virtual dimension lives together with the physicality of the stored Heritage and the notion of the cultural accessibility that configured an experienced practice on the web. The new Museum conception develops a different relationship with the public, now wide and diversified, which in addition to acquiring knowledge should become more and more curious and emotionally involved, and thus interacts with the heritage in original and participatory way through digital media. Within this scenario, the museum space became a “place” that stimulates cultural events and acquires more and more the features of public space of city and of territory. The paper investigates this scenario developing four main topics: the evolution of the concept of the Cultural Heritage relates to the legislative framework with particular reference to the Italian instance, in Italy the establishment of the Investigation Commission for protection and enhancement of historical, archaeological, artistic and landscape heritage, chaired by da Francesco Franceschini (1964-1967), to the Ministerial Decree of 12-23- 2014, are both expressions of a change that follows the use of innovative technologies and the transformation of the museum use in relation to the city and the territory; a brief historical review on Laboratory Museum foundation dating back to the last century and the role of the Design in museum experiences; how the Informatics Technologies can integrates as a medium to the storytelling experience; the presentation of new projects, interdisciplinary, inter-institutional and pedagogical, that involve architecture, design, performing arts and artificial Intelligence from the perspective of innovation and from the different interpretation of digital cultures aimed at involving wider audiences through new forms of pleasure.
