Abstract

Only few concepts are so effective to resume the current Zeitgeist as the concept of Risk does. This simple word - used over the centuries almost exclusively by sailors, insurers and gamblers - nowadays entered the common language to shape the typical sense of uncertainty and dismay of late modernity, till becoming an unifying cultural frame, binding together a wide range of social phenomena. Virtually, there is no setting of individual and social life that may not be considered within the semantics of risk: technological disasters, earthquakes, food habits, pregnancy, travels, social conflicts and financial business are at the same time the subject and the object of countless choices and social practices. Risk has become a key concept to describe and explain contemporary society, which significance concerns the organization of knowledge, the management of the change and the way people deal with its own future. Hence, Social Sciences will play a fundamental role in understanding the ways in which risk is acknowledged, defined and managed by individuals, groups and institutions. Since such processes never occur in a social and moral vacuum, it is essential to understand the epistemological, cultural and political dimensions underpinning risk definitions and their related communication logics. Theoretical approaches select some particular ways to deal with risk-related problems, therefore any approach should be seen as an expression a specific ideal-typical conception of the relationships between science and society, man and environment and between present and future. Such ideal types also result in different way to conceptualize sender, receiver and communication process itself. By considering that Risk Communication is aimed at producing informed decisions as well as informed public, one should go beyond the idea of communication as a mere transmission of scientifically sound information, to embrace a most comprehensive and complex analysis of messages, channels, discourses and contexts. Proceeding this way, the awareness of social, cultural and psychological dimensions of risk will be recognized as a pivotal resource to properly address risk communication problems, considering both individual freedom, agency and constraints arising from social context. Such book provides a critical review of the most relevant paradigms in risk studies field. It is organized by taking into account both the increasing complexity of the different theories (introducing a cyclic perspective), and the way these are currently applied in multiple areas (also enforcing a co-presence perspective).
