Abstract

The Peace-building Commission has been established with the aim to support the States in the post-conflict situations, so to prevent that they fall in a war again. As affirmed by the Secretary General in 2005, Kofi Annan, in fact, half of all countries that emerge from war laps back into violence within five years, because they are often unable to establish the necessary institutions which can ensure that peace agreements are implemented in a sustained and sustainable manner. Although the original objectives were very ambitious, the Peace-building Commission to date has yet to become an effective player in peace-building. By the analysis of its main activities, particularly in Burundi and Sierra Leone, in fact, it may be affirmed that the Commission has not met the differentiated challenges facing countries emerging from conflicts. In this context the review conference of 2010 could have been a good opportunity develop ideas and concrete strategies to re-launch the Commission. Nevertheless the recommendation of the 2010 review don’t seem sufficient to achieve such a goal.
