Using diverse analytical tools (including high resolution µCT and μMRI), three fossil human teeth (including two incisors and a molar) recovered in the frame of the “Buia International Project” at the one-million-years-old sites of Buia and Mulhuli-Amo, in the Danakil Depression of Eritrea, were analyzed for their outer and inner macromorphology and microstructure and compared with similar evidence from Pleistocene and extant human groups. We also assessed root completion timing in one of the incisors and showed that it compares well with data for root apex closure in modern human populations.

Abstract

Using diverse analytical tools (including high resolution µCT and μMRI), three fossil human teeth (including two incisors and a molar) recovered in the frame of the “Buia International Project” at the one-million-years-old sites of Buia and Mulhuli-Amo, in the Danakil Depression of Eritrea, were analyzed for their outer and inner macromorphology and microstructure and compared with similar evidence from Pleistocene and extant human groups. We also assessed root completion timing in one of the incisors and showed that it compares well with data for root apex closure in modern human populations.
