Abstract

The theme of minimal places, urban inserts that are discharged in appearance, forgotten in daily use, has been investigated at ecosystem level, accompanying students on an ideal journey to a loosely city, searching for all the spaces hidden behind usual backdrops of planned city, imagining a new life, starting from redefinition of use conditions, before physical-spatial reconfiguration. Investigation of these spaces involves a very accurate reading of city life layers, digging deep, not content with a superficial perception of the main streets of “everyday life”. These informal spaces represent the back of configured city and as such are considered residual spaces in which the waste of daily life is deposited. On the contrary, these spaces represent a great wealth both in terms of settlement and relationships and must necessarily be reactivated, returned to ordinary use. Abandoned spaces represent a wealth, a new depth to be investigated by technological design tools, in order to return to the city and its citizens unexpected values and ways of use, enriching community social capital, collaborating to keep connected ambits of official city. Design research on “urban inserts” is focused in B-Side workshop, which develops activities on marginal, disused, underused, not designed, not planned areas, characterized by dynamics of informal management, which often escape the conscious perception of citizenship because somehow distanced, physically separated from context settlement or simply because not integrated.
