For many years have witnessed crisis in the cinematographic sector leading to the selling off or transformation of many historical cinemas. In Rome alone, over the last twenty years, more than thirty cinemas have closed. This has resulted in the spread of a growing awareness, among scholars in the sector and public opinion, of this problem which has led to considering this important building heritage as an asset for the community, highlighting the need to preserve and protect it for its formal and also typological and structural features. However, the issues relevant to the transformation and enhancement of these works, which must always begin from the study and architectural knowledge of the building itself, are many and complicated. Often, the reuse of the building involves the reorganization of the different spaces, also concerning the equipment and facility systems and compliance with regulations. This paper describes a study conducted within the framework of a much wider research regarding the Capranica Cinema, one of the most important historical movie theatres in Rome. The history of this building is quite complex as it was constructed in the mid-1400s when Cardinal Domenico Capranica chose the site to build his residence, a group of houses situated beside the Church of Santa Maria in Aquiro. At a later date, some of the rooms were transformed into formal reception halls and, in 1694, Pompeo Capranica decided to create an actual theatre. In 1881, the theatre closed and for a period was abandoned until, in 1910, Giuliano Capranica began the work to transform it into a cinema. It was opened in 1922, but in 2000 it was sold and today is occasionally used as a venue for events. Therefore, a redevelopment project is needed that, in keeping with its history, could revalue the building, proposing a new use based on its undeniable potential
Da diversi anni si assiste a una vasta e diffusa crisi del settore cinematografico che ha portato alla dismissione o alla trasformazione di molte sale storiche; solo a Roma i cinematografi chiusi negli ultimi venti anni sono più di trenta. Tale incremento ha contribuito a diffondere, tra gli studiosi del settore e nell’opinione pubblica, una particolare sensibilizzazione nei confronti di questa problematica che ha portato a considerare questo ingente patrimonio costruito un bene della comunità evidenziando la necessità di tutelarlo sia nei caratteri formali che in quelli tipologici e strutturali. Le tematiche relative al progetto di trasformazione e valorizzazione di queste opere, che deve partire sempre dall’analisi e dalla conoscenza costruttiva del manufatto, sono, però, molteplici e complesse; spesso, infatti, la riutilizzazione di questi spazi deve passare dalla riorganizzazione degli ambienti anche in relazione alle dotazioni impiantistiche e agli adeguamenti normativi. Il contributo illustra uno studio, condotto nell’ambito di una più vasta ricerca, relativo al cinema Capranica, una delle più importanti sale storiche della Capitale. Le vicende di questo edificio sono piuttosto complesse in quanto la sua costruzione risale alla metà del 1400 quando il cardinale Domenico Capranica scelse come luogo per costruire la propria residenza un gruppo di case situate accanto alla chiesa di Santa Maria in Aquiro. Successivamente alcune stanze della residenza vennero trasformate in sale per rappresentazioni, e nel 1694 Pompeo Capranica decise di organizzare un vero teatro. Nel 1881 la sala chiuse e fu, per un certo periodo abbandonata, fino a quando nel 1910 Giuliano Capranica intraprende i lavori per trasformarla in cinematografico. Inaugurata nel 1922, nel 2000 la sala è stata dismessa e oggi viene utilizzata saltuariamente come sede di eventi; sarebbe auspicabile, pertanto, un intervento di riqualificazione che, partendo dalle sue stratificazioni storiche, potesse valorizzare il complesso riproponendone l’uso sulla base delle sue indiscusse potenzialità.
