Right after Rome, the ancient city of Ostia is the archaeological site where the most considerable number of Latin inscriptions has been discovered. After the publication of the XIV volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (1887) and the Supplementum Ostiense (1930), a significant number of new inscriptions was brought to light during the “Grandi Scavi 1938-1942”, the majority of which remained unpublished. Few years ago, a group of Italian and French researchers started a project for the systematic edition of such archaeological evidence. This publication counts more than two thousand new funerary Latin inscriptions, discovered in Ostia and currently preserved there (plus 168 lost inscriptions). The inscriptions collected in this catalogue are numbered and scientifically analysed: description of the object, transcription of the Latin texts, and commentary. They represent a remarkable contribution to the knowledge of the onomastics, the families of the city, and the iura sepulchrorum. For each inscription a high-quality picture is provided. The index at the end of the catalogue constitutes the second part of the book, which adopts the traditional thematic classification. The volume is completed by a short bibliography, an index of the epigraphic sources, and the inventory of the inscriptions.
