Daniel Quinn is a writer of crime fiction who publishes stories about his detective hero, Max Work, under the Poesque pseudonym of William Wilson. At the beginning of Paul Auster's "City of Glass" (1985), the first installment of "The New York Trilogy" (1987), Quinn is mistaken for a detective named Paul Auster and employed by a mysterious, dyslexic youth, Peter Stillmann, to keep a watchful eye on his father, also named Peter Stillmann, who has recently been released from jail and ostensibly plans to kill his son.
