Girolamo Vitelli (1849-1935) is considered as one of the founders of modern Papy- rology, but in the first half of his career (from 1870s to 1900) he gained great renown as a classical scholar, active mainly in the fields of textual criticism and Greek palaeo- graphy. This paper offers a survey of Vitelli’s scientific output in these areas, in order to re-evaluate the importance of his contribution, sometimes underestimated, which appears to be no less significant than his subsequent papyrological researches.
