This volume is inspired by research, developed within the PhD program and significantly expanded in the following years, on the representation of the Colosseum and on the design of his architectural order. The constant and current historical, cultural and scientific interest towards the Colosseum, manifested also through recent restoration work, he supported and encouraged the development and expansion of this research. In the first part of the volume the studies on the representation of the Colosseum and on the design of its architectural order (drawings 1-17 and tables I-XX), also developed on the restitution of the north furnace survey. These constitute themselves as a gradual and analytical process of knowledge of architecture through the drawing, as well as an investigation into representation of classical architecture realized through traditional tools and drawing techniques (such as lapis, ink and watercolor), used according to the relevant criteria their different expressive value and their different ability to represent in detail the individual parts and the current state of the monument. In the second part, in addition to the exposition of the research methodology, the criteria of analysis and elaboration of the data and of the first studies on proportioning compliance to the module and to the Roman foot (tables D1-A43 and plates XXI-XXVI), they are collected the conclusions of the study in a series of tables (from XXVII to XXX) which show the proportion of the overlapping orders of the Colosseum compared to form and the Roman foot, highlighting the proportional relationships present throughout the factory. Reconstruct the possible original design of the Colosseum it means not only returning to the project of the work but also and above all reaffirm how and how much architecture and design have been, and still are, the expression of the constructive wisdom of the Romans and at the same time the representation of the greatness and power of their civilization.
Questo volume trae spunto dalla ricerca, sviluppata nell’ambito del dottorato1 e significativamente ampliata negli anni successivi, sulla rappresentazione del Colosseo e sul disegno del suo ordine architettonico. Il costante e attuale interesse storico, culturale e scientifico verso il Colosseo, manifestato anche attraverso i recenti lavori di restauro, ha sostenuto e incoraggiato lo sviluppo e l’ampliamento di questa ricerca. Nella prima parte del volume sono raccolti gli studi sulla rappresentazione del Colosseo e sul disegno del suo ordine architettonico (disegni 1-17 e tavole I-XX), sviluppati anche sulla restituzione del rilevamento del fornice nord. Questi si costituiscono come un graduale e analitico processo di conoscenza dell’architettura attraverso il disegno, oltre che come un’indagine sulla rappresentazione dell’architettura classica realizzata attraverso strumenti e tecniche di disegno tradizionali (quali lapis, inchiostro e acquerello), utilizzati secondo dei criteri concernenti il loro diverso valore espressivo e la loro differente capacità di rappresentare dettagliatamente le singole parti e lo stato attuale del monumento. Nella seconda parte, oltre all’esposizione della metodologia della ricerca, dei criteri di analisi ed elaborazione dei dati e dei primi studi sul proporzionamento rispetto al modulo e al piede romano (tabelle D1-A43 e tavole XXI-XXVI), sono raccolte le conclusioni dello studio in una serie di tavole (dalla XXVII alla XXX) che mostrano il proporzionamento degli ordini sovrapposti del Colosseo rispetto al modulo e al piede romano, evidenziando i rapporti proporzionali presenti in tutta la fabbrica. Ricostruire il possibile disegno originale dell’ordine architettonico del Colosseo significa non soltanto ritornare al progetto dell’opera ma anche e soprattutto riaffermare come e quanto l’architettura e il suo disegno siano stati, e tuttora sono, l’espressione della sapienza costruttiva dei romani e al tempo stesso la rappresentazione della grandezza e della potenza della loro civiltà.
