This paper describes the results of the research "Innovazione e Utopia nel design italiano" (scientific coordinators: S. Lucibello - Sapienza University of Rome, Department PDTA - Planning, Design, Technology of Architecture and F. La Rocca - Second University of Naples, Department DICDEA - Civil Engineering, Design, Construction and Environment), developed with the goal of reading, through the lens of innovation and utopia, "the main characters" of the new Italian design (since 2000). The Research "Innovation and Utopia for Italian design", is in continuity with the National Research coordinated by the PDTA Dep. of Sapienza "Comunicare il design italiano: innovazione per cultura" (2011), which was attended by the Politecnico di Milano, University IUAV Venice, II University of Naples, University of Florence, University of Genoa (project leader: T. Paris, national scientific coordination: S. Lucibello and V. Cristallo). Among the main results of the analysis, commissioning highlights of a particular ability of Italian design to innovate not relying on substantial economic, but on the attitude visionary capable, past and present, to imagine the future.
