Miraculous Images in Roman Nunneries in the Age of the Counter-reformation

In times of crisis, the Roman Church often witnesses a resurgence of miraculous events. The same phenomenon occurred during the 16th and 17th century, when the Western Christian Unity shattered because of the spread of Protestantism across Europe. The essay focuses on the great proliferation of miraculous events linked to sacred images that took place within the walls of nunneries, as reported by the documents and manuscripts kept inside such religious communities and sometimes written by the nuns themselves. In this sense, the defense of the cult of images merged with the defense of monasticism, two elements of the Catholicism that the Protestant Churches had disputed and denied.

In tempi di crisi, la Chiesa romana assiste spesso al risorgere di eventi miracolosi. Lo stesso fenomeno si verificò durante il XVI e XVII secolo, quando l'unità dei cristiani occidentali fu spezzata dalla diffusione del protestantesimo in tutta Europa. Il saggio si concentra sulla grande proliferazione di eventi miracolosi legati alle immagini sacre che ebbero luogo all'interno delle mura dei conventi femminili, come riportato dai documenti e dai manoscritti conservati all'interno delle comunità religiose e talvolta scritti dalle stesse monache. In questo senso, la difesa del culto delle immagini si associò alla difesa del monachesimo, due elementi del cattolicesimo che le chiese protestanti avevano contestato e negato.
