Die Grammatikalisierung deutscher Präpositionen. Zweite Auflage

How many prepositions exist in contemporary German and what forms do they take? How do they vary with regard to position, government and orthography? These issues are investigated in the framework of grammaticalization theory. The book adopts a primarily synchronic perspective and is based on a large corpus of data drawn from written texts of the nineties. Since most prepositions also function as content words (adverbs, adjectives, verbs, nouns) or as syntactic structures (mainly PPs), the first issue the book deals with is the boundaries of the “preposition” category. The second important issue is the search for correlations between the semantic, morphological and syntactic properties of prepositions. Particular attention is paid to synchronically observable alternations in position (preposing, postposing, circumposing), government (dative/genitive) and orthography (use of capital vs. small initial letter; writing as two words vs. one word). These alternations are statistically documented and viewed as a consequence of partially conflicting prototypicalization and iconization processes.

Welche Präpositionen gibt es in der deutschen Gegenwartssprache? Wie sehen sie aus? Welche Varianten können sie aufweisen bezüglich Stellung, Rektion und Orthographie? Diese Fragenkomplexe stehen im Mittelpunkt der primär synchronisch ausgerichteten Arbeit, die erstmalig die Grammatikalisierung der deutschen Präpositionen als ganzheitliches Phänomen auf der Basis eines umfangreichen, breitgefächerten Korpus untersucht. Da die meisten Präpositionen zugleich als Inhaltswörter (Adverbien, Adjektive, Partizipien, Substantive) bzw. als syntaktische Strukturen (vor allem PPs) fungieren, wird zunächst der Frage der Abgrenzung der Kategorie “Präposition” nachgegangen. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt bildet die Suche nach Korrelationen zwischen semantischen, morphologischen und syntaktischen Eigenschaften der Präpositionen. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die synchronisch zu beobachtenden Alternationen in Stellung (Prä-/Post-/Zirkumstellung), Rektion (Dativ/Genitiv) und Orthographie (Groß-/Klein-, Getrennt-/Zusammenschreibung) gerichtet: Sie werden statistisch dokumentiert und als Folge von z.T. konfligierenden Prototypisierungs- und Ikonisierungsprozessen erklärt.
