The Transformation process of the Orvieto Cathedral. Il Processo di trasformazione del duomo di Orvieto

Since its building to now the work has undergone various renewal interventions functional, structural and figurative. These changes have led to a continuous reinterpretation of its inside and outside space. The grant intends identify, through the writing of a chronology complete, within the entire process of transformation of the work, all construction phases that led to the definition of the current state, dealing with the various projects transformation, realized or not, the ones already published (in the aspects not yet dissected) and the ones unpublished. The intent is to focus attention on some neglected historical phases by architectural literature on the subject of the Orvieto cathedral and especially on the restorations recovery the late nineteenth century, documenting all actions on the organism architectural, aimed at eliminating, in some cases, and at replacement of structural and figurative elements that make the work a neo-medieval product.

Il contributo intende, attraverso la stesura di una cronologia il più possibile completa ed esaustiva, individuare, all’interno dell’intero processo di trasformazione dell’opera, tutte le fasi costruttive che hanno portato alla definizione dello stato attuale, affrontando i vari progetti di trasformazione, realizzati e non, quelli già pubblicati (negli aspetti non ancora scandagliati) e quelli inediti. L’intento è quello di porre l’attenzione su alcune fasi trascurate dalla pur autorevole letteratura sul tema e di portare alla luce una fase, quella dei restauri di ripristino di fine Ottocento, documentando nei dettagli tutti gli interventi fortemente invasivi dell’organismo architettonico, volti all’eliminazione, in alcuni casi, e alla sostituzione di elementi strutturali e figurativi che fanno dell’opera un prodotto di architettura neo medievale.
