Epilepsies associated with encephalopathy or diffuse cerebral damage were defined in the past "epileptic encephalopathies". Recently , this concept has been deeply revised, restricting the criterion of inclusion to the forms in which the epilepsy itself is responsible of brain dysfunctions with mental and neurologic decline. This involves that some syndromes once included in these forms, according to the new definition, are no longer part of them today. Based on this new approach, this chapter describes the main clinical and EEG characteristics of epileptic encephalopathy of Infancy and Childhood.

Abstract

Recently , this concept has been deeply revised, restricting the criterion of inclusion to the forms in which the epilepsy itself is responsible of brain dysfunctions with mental and neurologic decline. This involves that some syndromes once included in these forms, according to the new definition, are no longer part of them today.
