Le iniziative di Pio XI per difendere la Chiesa in URSS (1922 - 1939).

At the beginning of 1923 the Politiburo of the Central Committee of the Russian PC decided to launch a repressive wave that hit the Catholic communities of Petrograd with arrests and death sentences. The Vatican reaction was substantially marked by moderation in the hope of being able to guarantee conditions for the survival of the Catholic Church. The talks started in Berlin through the nuncio Pacelli did not reach the hoped for results reinforcing the opinion that it was necessary to put the Soviet authorities in front of the institution of a new hierarchy, to then find a legal compromise. This task was entrusted to the French Jesuit Michel Bourguignon d’Herbigny. The wave of arrests and trials that followed and changes within the Curia led to the launch of new projects in favor of Russia with the foundation of the Russicum Institute in Rome

Agli inizi del 1923 il Politiburo del Comitato Centrale del PC russo decise di dare il via a un'ondata repressiva che si abbatté sulla comunità cattoliche di Pietrogrado con arresti e condanne a morte. La reazione vaticana fu sostanzialmente improntata alla moderazione nella speranza di poter garantire condizioni per la sopravvivenza della Chiesa cattolica. I colloqui avviati a Berlino attraverso il nunzio Pacelli non giunsero ai risultati sperati rafforzando l’opinione che fosse necessario porre le autorità sovietiche di fronte all’istituzione di una nuova gerarchia, per poi trovare un compromesso giuridico. Tale compito fu affidato al gesuita francese Michel Bourguignon d’Herbigny. L’ondata di arresti e processi che seguì e cambiamenti interni alla Curia determinarono l’avvio di nuovi progetti a favore della Russia con la fondazione del è l’istituto Russicum di Roma
