Il gioco dell'architettura. Dialoghi su ieri oggi e domani

The book is the result of a dialogue between the two surviving authors for more than a decade. They met two, three times a year, and discussed some of the themes that were suggested by either one or the other. The differences - certainly of a cultural and anthropological nature - have kept the interest in the discussion alive. Sometimes the intent was formed naturally, in other cases it was difficult to find convergences. Aware that the background on which the dialogue was projected was that of the generational confrontation, the two architects decided to share a space of trade-contrasts that would not erase the differences in an ideal synthesis. The long time has provided the antidote to prevent conversations, fleeing at their speed, leaving no room to mature a reflection. Dialogue has served to build a relationship between often opposing and contradictory elements that arises from confrontation and tension and is based on the need for the parties to understand, while often remaining in disagreement. In this "shared region" they have faced some thematic pairs: education and profession of the architect, past and future, theory and project, symmetry and asymmetry, minimalism and maximism, going to sketch a thought and a world of relationships that have an immediate relegated to how to read and understand the project in the current scene. In Portoghesi's words, he recalls that history of Italian (and international) architecture of the twentieth century that he has gone through in his long career. In those of Spita often refer to the current landscape of Japanese architecture and its relationship with the West. The protagonists of the dialogue also sought to identify some possible developments of the imminent scenario and some "open alternatives" that identify the themes on which to work to improve the prospects for a future that looks uncertain and often uninformed on the horizon. The comparison ends with a "play of words" that identifies themes and terms to use to attract the involvement and attraction of young architects to responsible construction of the future. With the conscience that, in the end, the crisis of architecture is nothing other than its abstinence from life.

Il libro è frutto di un dialogo tra i due autori protrattosi per più di un decennio. Si incontravano due, tre volte l'anno e discutevano su alcuni temi che di volta in volta venivano suggeriti dall'uno o dall'altro. Le differenze - senz'altro di carattere culturale e anagrafico - hanno tenuto vivo l'interesse per la discussione. Talvolta l'intesa si è formata naturalmente, in altri casi è stato difficile trovare delle convergenze. Consapevoli che lo sfondo sul quale proiettare il dialogo era quello del confronto generazionale i due architetti decisero di condividere uno spazio di intese-scambi-contrasti che non annullasse le differenze in una sintesi ideale. Il lungo arco di tempo ha fornito l'antidoto per evitare che i colloqui, fuggevoli per la loro velocità, non lasciassero lo spazio per maturare una riflessione. Il dialogo è servito a costruire una relazione tra elementi spesso opposti e contraddittori che nasce dal confronto e dalla tensione e si basa sulla necessità delle parti di comprendersi, pur restando spesso discordi. In questa "regione condivisa" hanno affrontato alcune coppie tematiche: educazione e professione dell'architetto, passato e futuro, teoria e progetto, simmetria e asimmetria, minimalismo e massimalismo, andando a tratteggiare un pensiero e un mondo di relazioni che abbiano un'immediata ricaduta sul modo di leggere e intendere il progetto nel panorama attuale. Nelle parole di Portoghesi si ripercorre quella storia dell'architettura italiana (e internazionale) del XX secolo che egli ha attraversato nella sua lunga carriera. In quelle di Spita ritornano spesso riferimenti al panorama attuale dell'architettura giapponese e al suo rapporto con quella occidentale. I protagonisti del dialogo hanno inoltre cercato di individuare alcuni sviluppi possibili dello scenario imminente e alcune "alternative aperte" che individuino i temi sui quali lavorare per migliorare le prospettive di un futuro che all'orizzonte si profila incerto e spesso insensato. Il confronto termina con un "gioco delle parole" che individua temi e termini da usare per richiamare il coinvolgimento e l'attrazione di giovani architetti verso la costruzione responsabile del futuro. Con la coscienza che, in fondo, la crisi dell'architettura altro non è che la sua astensione dalla vita.
