This paper gives a comprehensive analysis on Near Field Communication, a short-range, standards-based wireless connectivity technology, based on RFID technology that uses magnetic field induction to enable communication between electronic devices in close proximity. It provides a seamless medium for the identification protocols that validate secure data transfer. NFC enables the so called “touch paradigm” in which users could perform intuitive, safe, contactless transactions, access digital content and connect electronic devices simply by touching or bringing devices into close proximity. The paper illustrates some NFC-based applications developed by the RFID Lab of “Sapienza” University of Rome and points out the importance of creating an NFC ecosystem, which is the main purpose of the European research project called StoLPaN (Store Logistics and Payment with NFC).
