The involved reader. The Quiet Volume by Ant Hampton and Tim Etchells. The essay discusses a performance devised in 2010 to be staged in a library and that is still taking place in various reading rooms around the world. The Quiet Volume was presented by the authors - Ant Hampton and Tim Etchells - as a form of ‘autoteatro’, a self-generated and automatic performance for two audience-members at a time involved, via headphones and written texts, in the world of reading. Starting from the analysis of the different text materials used in The Quiet Volume (oral traces, notebook, and books), we will focus our study on the way to perform the act of reading, as an embodied activity. Allowing each participant to feel, think and see the epistemological value of this reading experience, The Quiet Volume could be considered a paradigmatic work, questioning the knowledge system applied by Western theatre and performance, through the criticism and investigation of one of its main tools: the written text.
