This research conducts a comprehensive review of the speeches delivered by presidents of economic and finance associations: the European Economic Association (EEA), the American Finance Association (AFA), and the American Economic Association (AEA). The period of analysis spans from 2005 to 2022. The primary objective of this study is to analyse the main topics and priorities discussed in these speeches, with the aim of determining whether top finance and economics scholars share the same type of concerns or highlight other issues, specifically looking at their views on academia. The study utilizes qualitative text analysis (Krippendorff, 2018) to derive meaningful insights from the textual data. The speeches are reviewed in multiple rounds in order to understand common underlying themes and objectives. We find that while in the EEA climate and inequality are popular topics, the AEA speaks extensively about monetary policy. The role of academia and the research-practise gap is address in multiple ways within the AFA, while the economic associations are not concerned by this.
