Increased computational capacities and augmented awareness about the uncertain nature of parameters and models involved in structural design are orienting current verifications in an explicit probabilistic direction. In order to perform such computations probabilistic distributions of mechanical parameters are necessary. Mortar compressive strength distributions are investigated herein with reference to previously published experimental results, related to three mixes, for which a reasonably large number of specimens were tested. Two distributions are considered: normal and log-normal, and three statistic tests are performed to assess which distribution is most appropriate: Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kolmogorov-Smirnov-Lilliefors, and Shapiro-Wilk. Analysis results show that normal distribution is more effective for medium to high strength mortars, whereas log-normal distribution is recommended for low strength mixes, as can be encountered in existing buildings. Nonetheless, simplified distributions assumed in the literature cannot always match completely the laboratory values trends.
