Elena Fanailova (b. 1962 Voronezh) has a medical degree from the Voronezh Medical Institute, and for six years worked as a doctor. Today she works as a journalist and correspondent for “Svoboda News”. She is the laureate of the “Andrey Bely Prize” (1999), “Moskovsky Schet Prize” (2003) and “Joseph Brodsky Memorial Foundation Fund” (2013). She has five books of poems. Her poetry is characterized by its harsh outlook and precise language. During the early 2000s it came to be representative of the new Russian literary preoccupation with the theme of citizenship and the problems of personal historical memory and historical self-image. Gattomerlino’s book series “Poeti della Fondazione Josif Brodskij” (Poety Fonda Iosifa Brodskogo), “Serie blu” (Poetry in Translation) will give the Italian reader the chance to know this interesting poet. The book offers a selection of her poems from the books “Black suits” (2008), “Lena and the People” (2011) and the verses on Rome, written during the stay in Rome (Fall 2013) and published on Fanailova’s face book page. The poems have been selected, in agreement with the author, by the Italian translator Claudia Scandura.
