Although the work of Ellen La Motte has received very little critical attention, her collection "The Backwash of War" (1916) is an extraordinary description of the wounds--both physical and psychological--of the Great War, as seen through the eyes of as an American nurse working near the Belgian front. This essay shows that the stories are not only important as a social document but are also wondefully crafted.
