The paper describes an efficient subcell model for the simulation of thermoformed lightweight shield by the three-dimensional (3-D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The shield is made of a foil of polycarbonate, having the thickness of about 100 mm, coated with a two-layer thin film of tin and nickel. The model developed allows to simulate the metallic coating with nonuniform thickness and is applied to compute the shielding effectiveness of the thermoformed screen, The numerical results of the developed 3-D FDTD procedure are validated by comparison with experimental data. © 2004 IEEE.
