The article focuses on the specificities of the Ukrainian religious tradition, that is, its evolution in the multicultural, multiconfessional and multilinguisitc context of Ukraine as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the XVI-XVII centuries. Special attention is given to the particular aspects of the religious experience (such as “the fathers' faith” and “the neighbour's faith”), to the influence of protestantism, to the evolution of the concepts of freedom and individual rights. The latter stimulate the development of anthropocentric and secularistic tendencies, thus injecting European cultural elements into this Slavic-Byzantine tradition.
