This product presents a multi-level reading of Fūryū butsu (1889) by Kōda Rohan. When the research was carried out, no translation in Western languages of the novel was available, and the analysis has been therefore conducted only on the bases of the original text. Its complex prose, which draws its characteristics from different narrative styles and is influenced both from vernacular Japanese and from classical Chinese, together with its numerous keys to the reading, accessible only when taking account of the heterogeneous, implicit or explicit sources used by the author, make of this work a remarkable example of the novels written at the end of the Nineteenth century by Japanese writers who did not uncritically embrace the theories about the "new Japanese novel", largely influenced by the Western experience.

Il lavoro presenta una lettura su più livelli del racconto Fûryû butsu (1889) di Kôda Rohan di cui, al momento in cui è stata condotta l'analisi, non esistevano traduzioni reperibili. La prosa complessa, che attinge a stili diversi nel procedere dell'intreccio e in cui è forte l'influenza sia di un certo giapponese vernacolare, sia del cinese classico, ed i diversi piani di lettura, cui si accede solo tenendo conto del grande numero di fonti esplicite ed implicite, di origine particolarmente eterogenea, cui l'autore ha fatto riferimento, rendono il racconto un esempio particolarmente ricco della produzione di quegli intellettuali che, a cavallo tra Otto e Novecento, non vollero acriticamente abbracciare la lezione occidentale sulla scrittura in prosa che informava le diverse teorie dell'epoca sul "nuovo romanzo giapponese".
