The renovation and widening of the cruise terminal of the Port of Civitavecchia made it necessary to reconsider the safety of the quay on the 'Colombo' breakwater rear-side, and therefore to evaluate the protecting efficiency of this breakwater and parapet wall, particularly against wave overtopping. An intensive laboratory investigation on the breakwater overtopping performance was carried out at the 'Laboratorio di Idraulica Ambientale e Marittima' (LIAM) of the University of L'Aquila in order to optimise a new breakwater design. Both rubble mound and composite breakwaters with several different parapet walls were studied by means of a 2D physical model in scale 1 to 35. The present paper concentrates on the rubble mound breakwater tests, and illustrates both criteria and results of the wave overtopping investigation.
