The clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study of a case of trabecular carcinoma of the skin (Merkel cell tumor) is reported. The tumor involved medium and deep dermis, spared characteristically the epidermis and was constitued by cells in insular and trabecular arrangements. Immunohistochemical findings (PAP) showed neuron-specific-enolase, cytokeratin type intermediate filaments and neurofilaments in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. The Authors demonstrate that the keratin filaments were those of simple epithelia. Ultrastructural studies showed the presence of neurosecretory-type dense-core granules and characteristic paranuclear whorls of intermediate filaments.

Abstract
The clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study of a case of trabecular carcinoma of the skin (Merkel cell tumor) is reported. The tumor involved medium and deep dermis, spared characteristically the epidermis and was constitued by cells in insular and trabecular arrangements. Immunohistochemical findings (PAP) showed neuron-specific-enolase, cytokeratin type intermediate filaments and neurofilaments in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. The Authors demonstrate that the keratin filaments were those of simple epithelia. Ultrastructural studies showed the presence of neurosecretory-type dense-core granules and characteristic paranuclear whorls of intermediate filaments.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
