Although for most basic polymers, the basicity consts. detd. are apparent (i.e., they vary with degree of ionization), those for aminopolyamides [i.a. 3,3'-(methylimino)dipropionic acid-piperazine copolymer [76709-61-0], 3,3'-[ethylenedi(methylimino)]dipropionic acid-piperazine copolymer [73629-76-2]] are effective basicity consts. The potentiometric titrn. of the polyamides is similar to that of model compds. [Me3N, 4,4'-[ethylenebis[(methylimino)ethylenecarbonyl]]dimorpholine [70559-02-3], Me2NCH2CH2NMe2 [110-18-9], MeN(CH2CH2NMe2)2 [3030-47-5]]. The no. of obsd. signals in the 13C NMR indicates a fast equil. between all protonation sites, with no signals resulting from unprotonated species. Protonation sites in a given mer unit are unaffected by those in neighboring units.
