In this work the connections between morphodynamic conditions, hypsometric curve trends and the type and intensity of denudational processes of Torrente Salandrella basin (Southern Italy) have been investigated. The areal extent of denudational processes and the main geometric characteristics of the studied drainage basin have been expressed in quantitative terms. Hypsometric analysis can afford useful information about the type and the intensity of denudational processes: indeed, statistical analysis carried on suggest that both the high intensity of denudation and the marked effectiveness of removal processes due to running water contribute to the low values of hypsometric integrals. Morphodynamic conditions observed in the Torrente Salandrella drainage basin arc very difficult to explain by considering the traditional scheme of the "geomorphic cycle"; indeed, the plano-altimetric configuration of the studied area is not depending upon of the stage of the geomorphic evolution. Infact, many hypsometric curves in sub-basins characterized by active and widespread morphogenetic processes would correspond with "equilibrium stage" which instead is characterized by poor effectiveness of denudation. Therefore, the plano-altimetric configuration of many drainage basins - and of the smaller ones, in particular - seems to be more suitably explained by exogenous processes acting at present or in the recent pàst.
