Abstract

The trend towards the consolidation of new sensibilities that contribute to the definition of the "landscape-paradigm" suggests expanding the instruments of investigation and the factual inclusion of multiple actors in the different phases in which the territorial transformation is implemented: 1) the preliminary study of the context features and the formulation of transformative hypotheses, 2) the comparative assessment of alternatives with the aim to determinate what to prefer. This case study takes the opportunity of an applied research (the specialist advice for landscaping studies in the design of a new transportation infrastructure in the area of Rome) to reprocess reasoning on the theoretical landscape fundamentals with the aim to formulate a more comprehensive and integrated method for the landscape study and to verifying its practical applicability. The region in which the new highway link is planned proved to be particularly complex: a mosaic of diversified and often conflicting features “difficult to synthesize in a powerful idea” (CALZOLARI) that does not immediately allow the clear evidence of a “preferable transportation corridor”. Therefore, the area of study has been necessarily extended to maximum (approximately 247 km2). In detail, the “landscape study” unfolds in the following two main steps: a) study of the “physical reality” arranged into surveys/readings (terrain morphology; ecosystems; history of settlement transformations; present morphology of settlement; geographical landscape) targeted to understand the main physical features of the places and their main specificity; b) study of the “perception of reality” that involves (a) the reading of identity features of places and their hierarchical capability to express the particularities of a landscape and (b) the reading of the perception that Communities, that live in a place, have of its own territory. Through these readings, based on several criteria, the “landscape study” concluded with the achievement of a land’s portions multidisciplinary classification. This classification arises as a starting point for the construction of the “conceptual representation” of the study area features that is to consider in the comparative assessment phase.
