A comprehensive and simplified review of wear in gearing was discussed during a one day conference organized in Milan by the Tribology Group of Italian AIM. The most common types of surface damage were first recognized using the empirical classification accepted by researchers and engineers. The concepts were presented in a general way to look into the nature of most important wear mechanisms. The actions regarding the design and maintenance strategy, with reference to materials, surface treatments and lubrication were suggested.
