This text introduces the contribution of the author to the Seminar on the Renewal of Descriptive Geometry organized within the PhD course in Sciences of the Representation and the Survey, Sapienza, Rome University. Under the hopeful and now ineludibile renewal of Descriptive Geometry and a revision of its bases and traditional methods with attention to new methods for the mathematical and numerical description of surfaces, the essay afford quoted projections, representation method often neglected by the related literature, looking for its historical roots, the origins of its codes, main applications and future developments. Quoted projections are analyzed with special attention to topographic surfaces and the application modes of this method in digital cartography.
